The new Interior Minister Milovan Stankovic says he has reached agreement with the outgoing minister, Slavko Paleksic,to reunify the two sets of police.
The agreement to reconcile the factions, one loyal to President Biljana Plavsic, the other to supporters of the former Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic, is seen as the first sign of a hand-over of power following November's elections in the Republic.
In the only comment from the current government, the Prime Minister Gojko Klickovic said power would not be transferred until the new cabinet, led by an ally of Mrs Plavsic's, was sworn in in Pale on Friday.
The international community has accused the government of dragging its feet, and has urged it to hand over power earlier.
It has also been announced that no employees of the former government headquarters in Pale will be made redundant after the handover of power.
During a session in Banja Luka, the government decided that in future people previously employed by the pro-Karadzic former government would work for the Serb member of the collective Bosnian presidency, Momcilo Krajisnik, members of the government and parliamentary departments.
