New lawyer to defend Carlos the Jackal
A new lawyer has been appointed to defend the man known as Carlos the Jackal, who is being tried in Paris for murder.

His former defence team withdrew from the case because the court refused to order a new investigation into his alleged shooting in 1975 of two French intelligence agents and their Lebanese informer.

The defence contended the victims were actually killed in a plot by the Israeli secret service, Mossad, and the CIA.

Olivier Maudret, Carlos' new lawyer, asked for a one-week adjournment to study his client's case. This is now being considered.

When his defence team pulled out of the case, Carlos - whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez - had decided to take over his own defence.

Carlos is said to have masterminded a series of bombings, kidnappings and hijackings in the 1970s in support of the Palestinian cause.
