Nelson Acosta - Chile manager

Uruguayan-born Nelson Acosta has been at the helm of the Chilean squad since May 1996 when he replaced Spaniard Xavier Azkargorta.

He took over just after Chile had lost their opening qualifying match against Venezuala and was fortunate to have 15 more games to secure qualification for the finals.

Having lived there for 20 years and become a Chilean national, Acosta has a strong affinity with the country. Despite his relative inexperience - only having been in charge of Union Espanola before his appointment - Acosta's biggest strength is his ability to motivate.

He does not mind ringing the changes and used more than 40 different players in qualification. He kept them on their toes too by saying that only six, including strikers Marcelo Salas and Ivan Zamorano, were guaranteed a place in his squad for France.
