This will be his fourth World Cup. He is 37 and has some 80 caps but is retiring at the end of France 98.
Van der Elst, who plays for Belgian league champions FC Bruges, was voted European Footballer of the Year in 1996, only for the trophy to be stolen from his car while he was celebrating.
