African Nations Cup final - Egypt 2 South Africa 0 (February 28)

Defending champions South Africa were given a rude awakening by Egypt when they were outclassed in the final of this year's African Nations Cup.

Egypt's win in Burkina Faso gave them the title for a record fourth time.

A disappointing South Africa, who had won the championship on home soil two years before, never looked like getting back into the game after Egypt scored twice in the opening 13 minutes.

Hani Ramzy and Hazem Imam set up Ahmed Hassan for the first after four minutes. The 22-year-old Ismailia midfielder's shot took a deflection off defender Mark Fish before beating the keeper on four minutes.

It was two soon after. Ramzy found Hossam Hassan from a set-piece and he fed Tarek Mustapha to fire in off a post.

The final was billed as a strikers' duel but both Egypt's Hossam Hassan and Benni McCarthy of South Africa were marked out of the game.

South Africa proved unable to penetrate a strong Egyptian defence. Their best chance came when Mosheu clipped the post in the second half.

The result saw Egyptian coach Mahmoud al-Gohari go down in the history books as the first person to collect winners' medals as a player and a coach.
