Austria 0 USA 3 (April 22)
Claudio Reyna shone for the USA as they gave themselves a huge morale-boosting win against fellow World Cup finalists Austria in Vienna.
He capped the night with a late goal that was cheered by Austria's hardy fans.
It was an important win for the 1994 World Cup hosts, who were without leading scorer Eric Wynalda through injury.
Austria were under-strength but eventually outplayed by a side which has made great steps forward in the 1990s.
Another scorer, Frankie Hejduk, also stood out, along with midfielders Brian Maisonneuve and Chad Deering.
Twisting and turning through the midfield, Reyna, 24, created the first goal by spraying a pass in the 53rd minute to a speeding Hejduk.
The second goal was off Reyna's 88th-minute backheel pass to Brian McBride, who drove in a shot from 18 yards. And the third was all Reyna, a solo run across the top of the box and a blistering shot inside the near post.
The USA had survived a tough opening trapped in their own half as Austria's two midfield maestros, Andy Herzog and Toni Polster, threatened to run the show.
But the home team faded as the game went on.
