Michel Platini is the father of modern French football. As a player he won 72 caps in a career spanning 15 years and in 1984 he shot France to victory in the European Championships, scoring nine of their 15 goals.

Now he is working hard to ensure France has a successful World Cup - off the pitch.

The 1994 French team is remembered as one of the most talented never to have won the World Cup. But its captain won plenty of honours at three clubs - AS Nancy-Lorraine and Saint Etienne in France, then Italian giants Juventus.

Platini was European Footballer of the Year for three successive years from 1983-85.

And when he finally hung up his boots in 1987, his influence remained and he became French coach a year later.

But as a manager he could not match his success as a player and he moved on to become Director of National Selection, a post he held from 1989 to 1992, until he took up his current role.

As co-president of the French World Cup Organising Committee alongside Fernand Sastre, Platini has been involved in every stage of the tournament's development.

With Platini at the helm, France hopes the World Cup will be a great success. But Platini himself is quick to remind people of what he regards as his greatest achievement: "My years in the French team _ one cannot wear the French shirt 72 times and forget it."
