The German team raise the World Cup [14'']
The 10th World Cup arrived in West Germany with a new trophy, new FIFA rules and a new FIFA president in Brazilian Joćo Havelange.

The hosts, with luminaries like Franz Beckenbauer, Gunter Netzer, Gurd Muller and goalkeeper Sepp Maier, were victorious, although they had some scares on the way.

Who played?

Several key nations failed to qualify from the 98 competing in the qualifying groups, including Hungary, Spain, France and England. But East Germany, Haiti, Australia and Zaire were in the finals for the first time.

What happened?

West Germany struggled through to the final, despite an embarrassing defeat in the first round by East Germany. It was one of the World Cup's greatest upsets and caused a mutiny among the players.

But they rallied in the semi-finals against a talented Polish team and went on to meet the Netherlands in the final.

The Dutch, led by Johann Cruyff, were advocates of total football - everyone being able to cover all positions. With players like Johanns Neeskens, Johnny Rep and Rudi Krol they swept through to the group stages.

The Final: The West Germans score twice to beat the Dutch [54'']
But West Germany were too strong in the final. Level after a penalty apiece, Muller scored the winner to give the Germans their second title in 20 years.

Any lasting memories?

West German players were constantly at loggerheads with German football authorities over player bonuses. Bad feeling remained after the final and the team's victory celebrations were spoiled when several players stormed out of the banquet after officials barred their wives.
