Football had developed into a tougher and more physical game by the time Chile hosted the seventh World Cup. But Brazil battled through to become only the third team to claim two consecutive titles.
Who played?
The number of teams in the qualifying rounds was increasing for each tournament - 56 tried their luck this time.
France and Sweden, who had impressed in 1958, failed to qualify while England were the only Home Nations side to make Chile.
What happened?
The worst game was between Italy and hosts Chile, a clash dubbed the 'Battle of Santiago'. Italy's Ferrini was sent off and had to be dragged from the pitch by police when he refused to walk.
Czechoslovakia were the surprise of the tournament. They managed a goalless draw against Brazil in the first round and qualified for the quarter-finals, where they knocked out Hungary.
Despite failing to produce the form which swept them to the title in 1958 and losing Pele to injury, Brazil managed to come from a goal down to win 3-1.
Any lasting memories?
A fan threw a bottle at Brazilian Garrincha, hitting him on the head after he was sent off during the semi-final against Chile. The following day he paraded the Chilean flag after Brazil won the final.
