Meet the BBC Team
Switzerland 1954

This was the year of the Magical Magyars and incredible scorelines. With Switzerland hosting the fifth World Cup, Europe was again treated to some sensational performances and a surprise win for West Germany.

Who played?

The tournament was fast becoming a global affair with 38 nations competing in the qualifying rounds - a new record. Of the 16 finalists, Olympic champions Hungary were hot favourites.

The four groups included several teams from Asia, Africa, South America and Europe, with Scotland making their first appearance at the finals.

What happened?

Hungary bulldozed their way through the group, beating Korea 9-0 and an under-strength German side 8-3, before knocking out Brazil 4-2 in an fraught quarter-final.

Scotland's first match ended in defeat to Austria and the resignation of their manager Andy Beattie. They departed the tournament after a 7-0 drubbing by defending champions Uruguay. Uruguay then beat England 4-2 in the quarter-finals.

Italy were beaten by Switzerland and went out after the first round, but the hosts lost the quarter-final to Austria 7-5 - another World Cup scoring record.

West Germany defeated Yugoslavia in the quarter-finals and demolished Austria 6-1 in the semis to set up a rematch against Hungary in the final. When the Magyars went two goals up, it looked like it was going to be a repeat of the first-round humiliation.

But the Germans fought back to equalise and in a thrilling climax Helmut Rahn scored the winner for Germany.

Any lasting memories?

In 26 matches, 140 goals were scored, at an average of 5.38 goals per game. There was plenty of action off the pitch too. The quarter-final between Hungary and Brazil ended in an all-out brawl in the dressing room.
