Georgians accuse Russia of moving checkpoint
There've been more protests in Georgia after Russian border guards allegedly moved a checkpoint into Georgian territory. The rallies organised by members of President Shevardnadze's party, the Union of Citizens began last week after a Georgian deputy foreign minister Malkhaz Kakabadze said the checkpoint had been moved one-and-a-half kilometres inside his country. Russian border troops have denied the move. The BBC Moscow correspondent says the incident is another sign of the tension between Moscow and Tbilisi; he says the mood in the Georgian government against Russia is stiffening. Last month, Russia decided to ease some sanctions on the Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia and buy its citrus fruits, a move which infuriated Tbilisi. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
