Islamists denounce "cowardly" killing of leader
Algeria has been wracked by conflict since 1991

El Ribat newsletter web site, organ of the Algerian opposition group the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) abroad, published the following statement in response to the death of FIS leader Abdelkader Hachani.

In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate

The Islamic Salvation Front

The Executive Committee Abroad

We have received with extreme sadness and sorrow the news of the martyrdom of brother Abdelkader Hachani, the chairman of the provisional national executive bureau of the Islamic Salvation Front [FIS], following a treacherous criminal attack.

While we strongly denounce this cowardly act against one of the FIS leaders, and consequently against the Algerian people's will and aspirations for peace and national reconciliation, we ask the authorities to open an urgent and serious investigation to reveal the circumstances of this ugly crime, the plotters and the executors and impose upon them a sever penalty.

Moreover, we believe that the eradicationist circles are responsible for this crime, benefiting in that from the current state of the political impasse in the country as a result of the attempt to forcibly exclude FIS from present and future legitimate political action.

These sinful circles embarked on executing the physical liquidation plan of the FIS leadership in order to shuffle the cards again and confront the Algerian people's aspirations for peace and national reconciliation.

In the end, we pray to God Almighty to have mercy on the soul of the brother martyr Abdelkader Hachani, accommodate him in His vast paradise and offer his kinsfolk and parents patience and solace over this grave ordeal. To God we belong and to Him is our return.
