Excerpts from Oskar Lafontaine's statement

Former German Finance Minister Oskar Lafontaine has delivered a statement about his resignation.

The following are excerpts from Lafontaine's statement.

"I would like to say that the decision has nothing to do with the direction of the policy that we have pursued over the past months.

"We are proud that we have fulfilled many promises. This is something new in politics, since all too often the voters were disappointed because the promises were not fulfilled.

We wanted social fairness, we wanted to pursue a policy for the benefit of the working people and their families. We have started this policy. And we met with great approval for it.

"The reason for my resignation is the bad team play we have shown over the past months. One cannot work successfully without good team play.

"Team play requires showing consideration for each other and supporting each other - in public too - and team spirit characterising the government's work.

"One example: while we are adopting tax reductions 5bn marks for medium-sized industries, the team is discussing whether or not we are pursuing a policy that is hostile to industry. Who can understand that?

"If the team does not play well anymore, one must look for a new team. My step was the precondition for that. I wish the new team and Gerhard Schroeder success in their work."

Family life wins

"Let me say something about the party itself. Of course, this step was not easy for me.

"I have been in this party for 33 years. I held senior positions for about 30 years. This is a longer period than many other politicians.

"I had asked myself again and again to what extent I could make this great burden compatible with my family, with my private life.

"And after many years I have now decided in favour of my private life, for all the reasons that I told you. I hope that the party will understand this.

"Today I would also like to express once again my thanks for the great trust that was invested in me, even for the great affection.

"This motivated me for many years to do this difficult work. I wish the party all the best in the future.
