Text of Obuchi acceptance speech

Text of brief address by Keizo Obuchi following his election as leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, as broadcast by Japanese television on24 July:

With your support, I have just been elected the 18th president of the Liberal Democratic Party. I am deeply moved by this result, and at the same time, I feel honoured.

Keizo Obuchi delivers his acceptance speech (in Japanese)
I keenly feel that my responsibility is heavy, as the nation is currently facing a very severe situation.

In spite of my poor ability, I intend to do my best to overcome the current crisis for the sake of the party and the nation.

I would like to express my gratitude to Mr Seisuke Okuno for the congratulatory remark he just made for me.

While obeying the will of outgoing President Ryutaro Hashimoto, I will make all-out efforts to tide over the current difficult situation in cooperation with all party members.

So, I ask you to give me your support, encouragement, and cooperation.

Thank you very much.
