Thailand Cabinet Approved

The King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej has approved the list of cabinet members submitted to him by the country's new Prime Minister, Chuan Leekpai.

Correspondents say two key appointments are of former bankers who had served under Mr Chuan's previous government between 1992 and 1995: Supachai Panitchpakdi as the deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs and Tarrin Nimmanahaeminda as the finance minister.

Mr Chuan himself has taken the defence portfolio and will be Thailand's first civilian defence minister since 1976.
