Death penalty abolished in Ukraine

Ukraine has abolished the death penalty in line with Council of Europe requirements.

President Leonid Kuchma signed a law today abolishing provisions on capital punishment with immediate effect.

The measure makes life imprisonment the maximum punishment in Ukraine.
