Ukrainian diplomat jailed for corruption

A former Ukrainian diplomat has been jailed for five and a half years for carrying out illegal currency transactions and abusing his position.

The diplomat, Vasyl Koval, who headed the Foreign Ministry's consular department in the mid-nineties, was found guilty of illegally issuing travel documents, concealing a criminal case and improperly buying a flat in the capital, Kiev, for eighty-thousand dollars.

Prosecutors said some of the offences also implicated aides to Pavlo Lazarenko, an exiled former Ukrainian prime minister, who is wanted on charges of large-scale corruption.
