Mr Anwar's former driver, Azizan Abu Bakar, who accused his former boss of sodomy is himself found guilty of sexual misconduct by an Islamic court and sentenced to three months in jail.

November 1999
Complaining of splitting headaches and after losing a lot of weight, Mr Anwar is once again admitted to hospital for a medical check-up.
As campaigning begins for Malaysia's snap general election, Dr Mahathir renews his attck on his former deputy accusing him of faking illness to incite opposition supporters to riot.
With Malaysia heading towards its general election, defence lawyers say they have been told that Mr Anwar's trial has been suspended with no date given for its resumption.
January 2000
Mr Anwar's sodomy trial resumes amid protests led by opposition supporters, which are broken up by riot police. March 2000
Former police chief, Abdul Rahim Noor, is convicted of assaulting Mr Anwar on the night he was first detained in 1998.
The Bar Council calls on the government to withdraw criminal charges against an attorney defending Mr Anwar. April 2000
A limousine driver tells the court he was offered thousands of dollars in return for false testimony that he had provided Anwar with girls and boys for sex.
Judge Arifin Jaka rules that Dr Mahthir will not have to testify in the Anwar case, saying he found no evidence that the prime minister was involved in fabricating allegations of sodomy.
A court rejects an appeal by Mr Anwar against his conviction on corruption charges.
June 2000
The sodomy trial comes to an abrupt halt after lawyers agreed to present their closing arguments in writing.
July 2000
Mr Anwar unexpectedly takes over his own defence in his sodomy trial, telling the court that Dr Mahathir, his former boss and mentor, was part of a "dirty, despicable" plot to oust him from power.
Mr Anwar is found guilty of sodomy and sentenced to nine years in prison, on top of the six year jail sentence he was given in 1999. |
