Sue Barker's golden moments - No. 4
Pat Cash
Pat Cash on his way to victory over Ivan Lendl in 1987
Sue Barker has seen many of Wimbledon's finest moments as a player and BBC presenter.

Here she looks back at Pat Cash's 1987 men's singles triumph over Ivan Lendl, and his joyous victory clamber through the Centre Court seats to embrace his coach and family.

There's no doubt that Pat was the crowd's favourite going into the match, although but I don't think anybody thought he could take the title in straight sets against such a tough opponent.

Ivan was contesting his second consecutive final, having lost to Boris Becker in three sets the previous year, but the Championship was to elude him again.

After winning the first set on tie-break, Pat really took control and ran away with the second 6-2. After that, there was little doubt that he was on his way to the Wimbledon crown.

One of the things I remember most about Cashie's win was his outstanding backhand lob which embarrassed Lendl time and time again.

Joyous climb

Of course, what people remember most about that final is Pat's joyous climb through the Centre Court spectators to reach the box where his family and coach were sitting.

It was typical of Pat's natural exuberence to do something like that, and it secured the 1987 men's final a special place in both Wimbledon's history and the memories of millions.

Pat was enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, and his triumph made up for the disappointment of losing in five sets to Stefan Edberg in the final of the Australian Open earlier that year.

A succession of injuries subsequently prevented him from adding to his tally of Grand Slam titles.

But, for some players, all it takes is one Wimbledon win to ensure their name lives on long after they have retired from the game.
