Winning the 1977 Wimbledon Ladies' Singles Final was the highlight of Virginia Wade's long and successful career.
The fact that her win over Betty Stove came in The Queen's Silver Jubilee year made it one of the famous tournament's most memorable triumphs. Born in Bournemouth in 1945, Virginia also won the US Open in 1968, the Australian and Italian Opens in 1972, and four Grand Slam doubles titles. A summariser with the BBC's TV tennis team since 1981, she was awarded the OBE in 1986.
