First set:

Rafter 1-0 Sampras
Rafter wins an easy service game to love with Sampras yet to get into his rhythm.
1-1
Sampras hits back with Rafter winning just one point - a double fault. Sampras also hits his first ace of the match.
2-1
Another easy service game, although Sampras does hit one clean winner off the Rafter serve.
2-2
Sampras' serve starts to click into top gear as he takes the game with four straight points including a winning second serve at an incredible 133mph.
3-2
Rafter passes his first test, coming back from 0-30 to take the game without losing another point.
3-3
Another easy service game although Sampras looks a little unsettled when he is called for a foot fault and then hits his second serve into the net. Service breaks look like they will be at a premium in the match.
4-3
Sampras pushes Rafter all the way but the Australian eventually holds his serve after six deuces.
4-4
The players come back after a short rain break and Sampras carries on where he left off - firing an ace with his first serve. But Rafter wins his first point against the Sampras serve other than Sampras' double faults.
5-4
After a two hour rain break the game resumes at deuce and Rafter immediately serves a doube fault to give Sampras a break point. But the Australian holds both his nerve and his serve to take a 5-4 advantage.

Sampras again holds his serve easily to put the pressure back on Rafter.

Rafter gets one foot in the tie-break winning his service game to love with Sampras unable to get a single return back into play.

Again no problems for Sampras as his 100th ace of the Championship helps him to another love game. The first set will be decided by a tie-break.

Sampras forces another break-point but Rafter comes good again at the crucial moment.

Rafter at last gets his first break break-point against the Sampras serve but is unable to gain the advantage. Sampras is not helping himself, however, by consistently giving away points on double faults.

Rafter's confidence is going up and he loses just one point in the game.

No break of serve, but Sampras breaks a string as he wins the game without trouble.

Service is held again as Rafter blockes a volley cross-court to level at 3-3.

Third set

Sampras produces a couple of telling returns to force deuce, but Rafter holds his nerve to take the game.

Three more aces take Sampras' tally to 18 and a superb drop volley closes out the game to love.

A backhand passing return gives Sampras his fifth break point of the match, but he can't take advantage as Rafter closes out the game.

Sampras misses a simple volley to an empty court after an athletic recovery from Rafter but he recovers to take the game with a 20th ace.
2-3
A wicked return gives Sampras three break points but Rafter claws the game back before firing a simple volley into the net to gift Sampras the first break of the match after a marathon game.
2-4
Sampras consolidates the break with his fifth lover service game of the match.
3-4
Rafter ends Sampras' run of three successive games, but not before offering up some big chances to the American.
3-5
Rafter takes the first point but Sampras turns up the power to force his rival to serve to stay in the match.
4-5Rafter is up to the challenge, forcing the pressure back on Sampras with a controlled service game.

Four huge serves see Sampras close out the set to move 2-1 ahead in sets and leave Rafter reflecting on that sloppy service game.

Fourth set

Rafter opens with a controlled serve-volley game to lead the fourth set.

Rafter gives Sampras a scare as he leads 30-15 but Sampras fights back in a game packed full of thrilling rallies.
2-1
A fantastic pick-up volley and a 14-stroke rally complete the game for Rafter.

Sampris replies once again with a massive serve out wide and some classy serve-volley play.
2-3Rafter shows signs of tiredness to offer Sampras three break points and, though the Australian saves two, he misjudges a Sampras mis-hit to trail in the fading light.

Rafter adjusts well to kill off a ball that kicks up wildly and a Sampras double fault then gives Rafter only his second break point of the match. But the American survives to hold his serve again after four deuces.
2-5
Rafter mis-reads a couple of volleys in the gathering gloom to set Sampras up for another break at a crucial stage.
6-2
Sampras' final service game is as clinical as all the others as he completes his seventh Wimbledon singles title just a couple of minutes before 9pm. There is just enough light to spot his parents in the crowd as they wave proudly to their history-making son and Sampras climbs up into the grandstand to embrace them.
