First set:

Williams is taken to deuce, but wins the game with a booming first serve. 2-4 Davenport saves two break points to hold her serve. 2-5 Williams wins an easy service game with a forehand crosscourt winner. 3-5 Davenport saves a set point before holding onto her serve. 3-6 After saving a set point, Davenport puts a forehand long to give her opponent the first set after just 32 minutes. Second set:
Davenport produces some strong baseline hitting to take the opening game of the set. 2-0 Davenport takes her opponent to deuce before converting a break point for a two game lead. 2-1 Williams breaks back immediately, exposing her opponent's lack of mobility with quality drop shots. 3-1 Three double faults gift Davenport another break. 3-2 Another Williams drop shot completes a run of four consecutive games going against serve. 3-3 A Williams ace brings her level with Davenport for the first time in the set. 3-4 Obviously in pain, Davenport serves a double fault at break point down to give her opponent a potential match-winning lead. 4-4 Showing the heart of a champion, Davenport changes tactics and breaks back. 4-5 Davenport puts a backhand wide to give her opponent the chance to serve for the championship. 5-5 Davenport records the eighth service break of the match to stay in the tournament. 6-5 A defiant Davenport finally holds her serve to take the lead. 6-6 Williams recovers from 0-30 to force the tie-break.
