Parmar makes Davis Cup squad

Greg Rusedski could still feature in Britain's crucial Davis Cup singles matches against Ecuador - despite crashing out of Wimbledon in the first round.

The squad for the tie, which takes place four days after the end of Wimbledon, was named by new captain Roger Taylor on Friday.

Rusedski's recent form has placed him under great pressure - and the inclusion in the four-man Davis Cup squad of 22-year-old Arvind Parmar could increase the likelihood of Britain's number two missing out on a singles rubber.

Rusedski crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round and told a post-match press conference he was taking a holiday "far away" from SW19.

But while he was suffering defeat at the hands of low-ranked American Vincent Spadea who had lost his previous 21 matches, Parmar progressed to the second round, having already performed well against Pete Sampras at the Stella Artois tournament.

Taylor, who has also named Lancashire left-hander Barry Cowan in the squad as a possible option to the Henman-Rusedski doubles-partnership, said: "Arvind has prepared very well for this summer and this was reflected in his win against Cedric Pioline at Nottingham and when he took a set off Pete Sampras at Queen's.

"He hit the headlines at Wimbledon and I feel he has a lot to offer the team while Barry has a lot of experience both in singles and doubles.

"But I am also delighted that we will also be able to call upon Tim and Greg for this important tie. Greg is very welcome back to the Davis Cup scene after his injury problems."

It will be the first appearance by Cowan, Britain's number five, in the Davis Cup squad but Parmar, who went out of Wimbledon in three sets to Swiss world number 33 Marc Rosset after beating Brazil's Andre Sa, has appeared twice before - against the Ukraine at Newcastle last year and the more recent defeat by the Czech Republic in Ostrava.

Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Taylor's first match in charge sees Britain needing to win to maintain their place in the elite 16-nation World Group.

On Wimbledon's Number One Court, on grass, Britain should win comfortably but Taylor, who has taken over as captain from David Lloyd, warned: "Ecuador will relish playing there and in Nicolas Lapentti they have a player in the world top 10."

The actual line-up for each match is unlikely to be named until shortly before the tie begins.
