Arvind Parmar's Wimbledon adventure came to an end, after he was conclusively beaten in straight sets by Switzerland's Marc Rosset.

The British number three, who recently took a set off Pete Sampras at Queen's and knocked out holder Cedric Pioline at Nottingham, was given little opportunity to reach the third round by the in-form former Olympic champion.

Parmar's hard-fought first-round victory over Brazilian Andre Sa was only his second five-set match. But it rarely looked like going that far as Rosset wrapped it up 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 6-3 in 13 minutes short of two hours.

Parmar, 22, battled impressively in the opening set which went to a tie-break after both players held their serves with a degree of comfort.

But the 6ft 7in Rosset captured a break for 4-2 lead in the tie-break and Parmar could find no way to retrieve the deficit, finally going down 7-4.

His opponent has gone out in the second round at Wimbledon more times than any other stage of the tournament, but in his 11th appearance at the championships, Rosset looked focused and determined.

He waited patiently for Parmar's error count to increase in the second set, before breaking through in the 11th game and then serving out with one of his 15 aces during the match.

Rosset had another break to go 3-1 ahead in the third and although Parmar produced a series of splendid passing shots to break back, he again lost his serve to slump to, what proved, an inevitable defeat.
