A-G Sidot (Fra) bt A Kournikova (Rus) 6-3 6-4
Anna Kournikova will have to wait a little longer for her first title after crashing out of Wimbledon to France's Anne-Gaelle Sidot. The Russian was beaten in straight sets after failing to repeat the form which had given her a first-round victory over 10th seed Sandrine Testud.
Her serve let her down badly as well, allowing Sidot to take command of the match. The pair exchanged breaks in the opening set but Sidot eventually won it 6-3 in 33 minutes. Kournikova was broken again in the third game of the second set after some careless errors. Sidot took full advantage, piling more misery on her opponent with some clean winners from the back of the court. Sidot looked as though she might hand the initiative back to Kournikova when she went down 0-30 while serving for the match. But she regained her composure and booked her place in round three with a rare ace.
