S Jeyaseelan (Can) bt (4) C Martinez (Sp) 6-4 6-1
Former champion Conchita Martinez was a shock casualty on day three at Wimbledon. The Spaniard and number four seed was dumped out of the women's singles the in second round 6-4 6-1 by Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan. It was the greatest win of Jeyaseelan's career, who is ranked 79th in the world. She outplayed Martinez, hitting a string of inch-perfect, two-fisted groundstrokes that found their mark on both sides of the court. Martinez, the 1994 champion and runner-up at the French Open this year, looked sluggish and tired, committing uncharacteristic errors especially in the second set. The 24-year-old Jeyaseelan, who had never progressed beyond the first round at Wimbledon before, finished Martinez off with a fine serve that the Spaniard returned wide. More to follow.
