David Chaytor

Date of birth

3 August 1949

Political profile

David Chaytor was elected for the marginal seat of Bury North in 1997 and re-elected in 2001, having also fought seats in 1987 and 1992.

He is an efficient and intelligent former lecturer and has carved himself an impressive backbench niche as an expert on education and a committed environmental activist.

He tends to pick specific, well defined issues on which to campaign - such as a right to paid educational leave for all workers.

He is also a staunch supporter of moves to reduce carbon emissions and led parliamentary calls for a boycott of Esso.

He is on the left of the Labour Party but mostly loyal, though he rebelled against the part privatisation of the National Air Traffic System.
