Nuisance bonfires are to be targeted by police and the fire service by using off-road motorbike patrols.

South Wales Police have given a warning that they will tackle any bad behaviour connected with Bonfire Night on and around 5 November "firmly".

The teams will work in the run-up to the night in the Sandfields area of Port Talbot, where nuisance bonfires have been lit in previous years.

The council will remove any bonfires found by the patrols.

Sgt Nikki Thomas, of Sandfields and Aberavon Neighbourhood Policing Team, said the aim was prevent bonfires being dangerously close to properties.

She said: "Bonfire Night should be a fun, family occasion but we are aware that it can also be a time of distress, especially for the elderly and for those with pets or young children.

"The officers who are out on patrol will be looking out for bonfires being built in the run-up to 5 November and will make arrangements with the local council to get them removed.

"They will also be proactive in telling the community how to stay safe on Bonfire Night and the best way of staying safe is to attend an organised display.

"My officers will take a firm stance on anti-social behaviour associated with this time of the year and the misuse of fireworks."
