Police officers assess the damage to the car

A six year prison sentence handed to a scrap metal dealer who reversed a 4x4 vehicle onto a police car that was following him has been welcomed.

Martin Richard Davies, 28, was jailed at Swansea Crown Court after admitting dangerous driving and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to a Pc.

The incident happened outside Siloh Chapel, in Siloh Road, Swansea.

Det Insp Andy Hughes said: "I believe that the sentenced passed reflects the seriousness of the incident."

He added: "Anybody who witnessed this crime or saw the photographs and saw the carnage that followed would appreciate its severity.

"Police officers just like members of the public should expect the protection of the courts."

The court heard Davies reversed a Nissan Terrano onto the roof of a police car in Siloh Road, Landore, on 14 April 2009.

The car, driven by South Wales Police constable Greg Parry, had been following him.

He was trapped inside the police car during the incident but was left shaken but unhurt.

Det Insp Hughes added: "I have spoken to the officer involved, and he would like to pass on his thanks to all the local residents who came to his assistance at the time, and all the support he has received since."
