High Street has been closed to traffic for eight days

A city centre street in Swansea closed to traffic for eight days after fears a building may collapse has been partially reopened. Safety works have been completed to the structure on High Street after building inspectors found "serious defects." One lane on the street that connects the city centre with the train station has now reopened. Some people living on Constitution Hill were evacuated at the weekend after a 10m (32ft) stretch of wall collapsed. A spokesperson for Swansea council said: "We have now been able to reopen one half of High Street and allow traffic to pass through under traffic controls. "Further investigations of the property will continue. We will be working with the property owner to ensure further works are completed that will enable us to safely open High Street fully. "We understand that the closure has caused a small amount of disruption for traffic in the city centre but hopefully the public will understand that this closure has been necessary to ensure the public are not put at risk. "The recent wall collapse in Constitution Hill clearly shows how quickly a structure can give way without warning. Our job is to try and assess the risks and act in the appropriate way."
