Residents have been evacuated after a high wall collapsed into the road on one of Swansea's landmark streets. The 10m (32ft) stretch of wall blocked Constitution Hill, close to the city centre, shortly after midnight. Local resident Luke England said it was "pure luck" that no-one was passing at the time, which left chunks of rock "as big as a Mini" in the road. Emergency services said residents of a Cromwell Road house were evacuated as a precaution and the area cordoned off. Mr England said the wall had sheered away next to a table and chairs.

"There's no way you can get a car from the top to the bottom of Constitution Hill," he said. "It's just a complete mess." Mr England said there had been torrential rain in the area on Friday, and it rained again on Saturday. Firefighters were called at about 0030 BST and remained there until a gas engineer and a council structural engineer arrived on the scene. There were no injuries, but police and ambulance officers also attended as a precaution. Constitution Hill is one of the best-known residential hills in south Wales, and is noted for its steep cobbled road. In 2004, Swansea council spent more than £750,000 resurfacing the cobbled road, after consulting Mount Pleasant Residents Association on maintaining the street's Victorian heritage.
