A sixth-form student from Pembrokeshire has died while on holiday in the Canary Islands with friends after finishing her A-level exams.

Jordan Carter, who was a pupil at Milford Haven School, died in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, on Tuesday.

Her mother said she was "perfect" and "the daughter everyone wanted."

The family said Jordan had no known illnesses while friends told Spanish police the teenager had seemed perfectly normal when she went to bed.

The rest of the seven-strong group of friends who had planned the holiday for a year flew home on Thursday.

The teenager spoke to her mother in Milford Haven the night before she died and told her everything was fine.

Mrs Carter said: "She was having a good time, talking from the hotel balcony while she and her friends were getting ready for a night out.

"They were having a chilled-out first week and had made plans to go scuba diving and to water parks for the second week."

She said: "We couldn't have wished for a better daughter. I don't know what we are going to do without her, its devastating."

Jordan's father Nick Carter added: "She was one in a million."

Her friends have told Spanish police that Jordan had no more to drink than usual and was perfectly normal when she went to bed.

But the girls woke up in their hotel room the next morning to find Jordan dead in her bed.

Her family said she had no known illnesses.

A family spokeswoman said: "All we know is that she died peacefully in her sleep. There was no accident, just that she seems to have died in the night."

Jordan had finished A-levels in travel and tourism, cookery and business studies at Milford Haven School.

Head teacher Islwyn Morgan said she was a "quiet, trustworthy, reliable and extremely well-liked" member of the school.

Consular assistance

Mr Morgan said Jordan was hoping to study travel and tourism at Trinity College in Carmarthen.

"In a quiet, unassuming way she took an active part in sixth form life," he added.

"She will be sorely missed by all."

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm a British national has died in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria on 30 June. Consular assistance is being provided."

A post mortem examination is due to be held in a Spanish hospital.
