Fifty dead sheep dumped in ravine

Walkers have found more than 50 dead sheep dumped in a deep ravine.

Contractors have started removing the rotting carcasses from the Forestry Commission land near Llanybydder, Carmarthenshire.

An investigation has been launched by officials from the county council and the Department of Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The sheep were discovered on Friday, but the council said they had been difficult to move due to the location.

Carmarthenshire council's head of public protection Philip Davies said: "It is most likely that these animals have come from a variety of sources and may have been involved in some form of collection scheme.

"There are a variety of breeds of sheep involved.

"The work of removing the sheep carcasses is ongoing.

"It is being carried out by contractors for the landowners."

Dyfed-Powys Police have also been alerted.
