Giving tattoos to under-18s is illegal

Public health officials are continuing to search for a tattoo artist believed to have caused infections in several teenagers at a house party.

A number of young people, some under the age of 18, have been diagnosed with infections after getting tattoos at a party in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire.

Police are helping carry out the inquiry into the identity of the tattoo artist.

It is unclear if safe practices were followed.

The National Public Health Service for Wales (NPHS) has called for anyone who has received a tattoo at a party to see their GP.

The identity of the tattooist remains unknown and the NPHS has said having a tattoo created by a mobile tattooist can pose a serious health risk.

'Dangerous' practice

Communicable disease control consultant Dr Mac Walapu said: "There is no way of being sure that these tattooists are using safe equipment and materials and are observing proper infection control practices.

"In this case, young people below the age of 18 have received tattoos and this is unlawful as well as dangerous.

"We are aware that it is possible for tattooing equipment to be purchased online and this is of concern to us.

"Anyone who has received a tattoo at a party should see their GP and will be offered screening for blood-borne viruses."

NHPS, Carmarthenshire County Council and Dyfed-Powys Police are now investigating the incident.
