Woman in hospital after flat fire

The fire service stressed the need for an evacuation plan

A woman was taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a block of flats on Friday evening.

The 14 storey building in the Butetown area of Cardiff was well alight and flames could be seen from the ground when fire crews arrived at the scene.

The building was evacuated while fire crews worked to bring the blaze under control.

One woman was taken to hospital as a precaution and residents were allowed back into their homes later.

The emergency services praised the occupiers with their 'calm' evacuation.

The woman, who lived in the burning flat, was taken to hospital was suffering with smoke inhalation.

Crews from Cardiff Central and Roath supported by crews from Ely, Whitchurch, Caerphilly as well as the police and ambulance attended the fire.

Group manager Andy Peterson praised the occupiers and said the incident highlighted the need for a working smoke alarm and fire evacuation plan.
