Family and colleagues of a taxi driver who died when his cab was in collision with a car being followed by police say his death was a tragic waste of life.

Raymond Tristram, 61, from Skewen near Neath, died just after 0100 BST on Saturday at Glais in Swansea.

A self-employed driver, he was believed to be working at the time. Two teenagers in the other car had head and leg injuries and were arrested.

The Neath Taxi Proprietors' Association said it was a tragic waste of life.

South Wales Police were following a blue Mazda and the Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.

In a statement Mr Tristram's family said: "Ray was a very quiet and caring man. He was very proud of all his children and grandchildren.

"He was a loving son to his mother Sylvia and caring brother to John.

"Raymond will be sadly missed by all who knew him"

Bob Hoyles, chairman of the Neath Taxi Proprietors' Association, said: "It has devastated his colleagues and it's so tragic for his family, our sympathies are with them.

"We are all in that position - you go to work and your family expect you to come home from the end of your shift."

The teenagers arrested after the collision were aged 17 and 19.
