An elderly man died shortly after he was rescued from a fire in a three storey block of flats in Swansea.

Fire fighters were called to tackle the blaze at 0200 BST on Carlton Terrace in the Mount Pleasant area.

Four other people escaped or were led to safety and the cause of the fire is not thought to be suspicious.

Police later named the man as Royston Riddler, 65. He was taken to Morriston Hospital suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation but later died.

The fire's cause has still to be established, but South Wales Police and the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are conducting a joint investigation.

The fire service said the terraced property was split into three flats over two floors and a basement.

One man was lead to safety from the basement flat.

Three women escaped from a first floor flat prior to the arrival of the crews.

Mr Riddler was rescued from the ground floor lounge.

A police spokesman said: "At this stage there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.

"A crime scene has been set up and is being examined by a forensic scientist in order to establish the exact cause."
