Pushy prams work-out for mothers

Extra money means the group will continue going into the summer
An exercise group where new mothers work-out by power-walking with their baby buggies is proving so successful, the scheme is being extended.

The Pushy Prams group in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire was set up to encourage exercise after child birth.

The mothers are led on a walk by a fitness instructor and pushing the prams is designed to burn fat, tone muscle and to meet new friends.

Originally designed for two months, the scheme will now run until the summer.

Organiser Eryl Daniels said she was delighted with how it had been received by new mothers and said she had even had a new father turn up for one of the sessions.

"It's quite an innovative way of exercising and not something we've done before," she said.

"It has taken off in other areas and is becoming big business in cities such as London."

Our message is bring your pram, get fit and have great fun

The Llanelli scheme is funded by Barclays Spaces for Sports and Sports Council for Wales and run by Carmarthenshire Council.

Sports development officer Ms Daniels said: "This is a fun workout, which will burn fat, tighten and tone muscles and help to meet other mums.

"It is a completely free course and we have been very pleased by the response."

She said some of those joining in were babysitting other children and anyone with a pram - whether they had a young baby or child of two or three years of age were welcome.

"Our message is bring your pram, get fit and have great fun."

The group meets at 1300 GMT on Thursdays at Bwlch Community Centre in Morfa.
