Mystery over teen's resort fall
Oliver Morgan
Oliver Morgan was well known in sporting circles in Pembrokeshire
It is unclear how a promising sportsman fell from a fire escape during a night out at a Pembrokeshire holiday resort, an inquest has heard.

Oliver Morgan, 19, was discovered at the rear of the derelict Cambrian Hotel in Saundersfoot in June.

The keen football and rugby player from Kilgetty had been drinking with friends in a nearby club but levels of alcohol found in his system were not high.

County coroner Michael Howells recorded a narrative verdict at Milford Haven.

Mr Morgan, a sports science student at Pembrokeshire College, had been working at the Deck Restaurant in Saundersfoot on the evening of 29 June.

After finishing his shift he went next door to the Sands Nightclub to join friends.

One of the last people to see him alive, Sophie Toy, said by 0200 BST he appeared to be in good spirits, but drunk, and had declined a lift home.

The following evening he failed to turn up for work and his family and friends, concerned about his whereabouts, reported him missing. His body was later found to the rear of the derelict hotel.

Scenes of crime officers initially secured the area but a post mortem examination by a forensic pathologist found no evidence of assault. His blood alcohol level was below the drink drive limit.

Footprints

Footprints appeared to establish Mr Morgan had climbed a fire escape at the hotel but had fallen and had died of injuries consistent with a fall from a height.

Coroner Mr Howells said: "I can't think why he should want to go up those steps at all - but nevertheless it does seem clear to me he did."

His verdict was that Mr Morgan died from injuries caused by the result of a fall on private premises, having consumed alcohol.

"One of the saddest things about this job is when young people pass away," he added.

Head-on crash

In a separate inquest, Mr Howells also recorded a narrative verdict into the deaths of husband and wife George and Phyllis Dunn.

They died from injuries sustained in a head-on car crash on the A477 travelling from St Clears towards Pembroke Dock on 14 June.

The inquest heard Mr Dunn, 89, from Solihull in Birmingham had pulled out to overtake a lorry and crashed head into an oncoming car.

Mr Howells recorded that the couple died from multiple injuries as a result of a road traffic accident which was caused as Mr Dunn was attempting to overtake another vehicle.
