Wild horses stop school playtime

The horses have roamed on Gower for generations

Children have been kept off a playground at a Swansea primary school after wild ponies invaded the grounds.

The ponies, which roam on common land across Gower, have entered Bishopston Primary School on several occasions and run across the playground.

Children at the school have been kept in during break times twice in the past week.

Swansea Council said it was looking for a long-term solution to the problem of the horses.

Bishopston head teacher Gareth Widlake said: "We've had a herd of about 21 horses getting into the school grounds and the school rugby pitch."

Temporary fences have been put up in an attempt to keep the horses out, but Swansea councillor Mike Day said: "We are hoping in the longer term that we would be able to put in things like cattle grids.

"But we are hoping that the school will be able to support us in our efforts to keep the horses out by, for example, closing gates at the appropriate times."

Gower Commoners' Association hopes to meet the school and council next week.
