Shop keepers wanted Tenby kept clear of street traders
|
Street trading on the seafront and within the walled area of Tenby is to restricted following a successful campaign by the resort's shopkeepers.
Around 75 businesses asked the county council to take a tougher line with people selling from makeshift stalls.
Street traders now need permission to operate and this would only be granted in conjunction with an organised event such as a carnival or outdoor market.
Shopkeepers say they hope the policy is now rigorously enforced.
The trades had complained that their businesses were suffering at the hands of street traders selling goods during the busy summer season.
Established businesses argued that they while they paid rates and employed staff during the quieter winter months street traders had no such overheads.
Jeweller Jane Williams of Arch House organised a petition earlier in the year.
She said: "We had about 75 signatures from shop keepers in the town.
"I'm really pleased they have passed this and all we want now is for it to be enforced."
Pembrokeshire Council's cabinet endorsed the policy following a review.
The authority warned it would take legal action against anyone trading illegally.
Meanwhile the annual Tenby summer car ban gets under way on Saturday.
Most vehicles will be stopped from entering the centre of the resort between 1100 BST and 1700 BST daily until 31 August.
