Makeover for Gower beaches
Rhossili
Toilets at Rhossili will be extended to improve facilities
Three of the most popular beaches on Gower are to get a 500,000 makeover.

The money has been secured under the European Objective One scheme to improve facilities at Knab Rock in Mumbles, Rhossili and Caswell Bay.

The money has been welcomed by tourism operators who say it will boost the industry.

During the winter the public toilets at Rhossili will be extended to provide disabled and baby-changing areas along with improved access.

The one big problem with the toilets at Caswell is to get to them you have to cross a busy road so just from a safety point of view that is a real bonus

Temporary facilities will be provided as an alternative and the project should be completed by Easter.

New benches and furniture together with signs will be erected around the Knab Rock area, which is popular with water skiers and yachters.

At Caswell Bay the toilets will be relocated from the existing car park to the foreshore opposite the beach shops.

Swansea Council, which applied for the money, said the new building would improve safety for beach-users.

It is scheduled to open in spring 2005.

The authority says the beaches are all within the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and works will be of the highest standard to ensure they meet guidelines.

Council cabinet member for environment David Jones said: "These three beaches on the Gower Peninsula are among the finest in Europe and now we are providing first class services and facilities for beach-users.

"Both local users and tourists will see a major improvement."

Tourism Swansea, the trade association representing business in the area, said any moves to improve facilities for visitors were to be welcomed.

Chairman Geoff Haden said: "The toilets at Rhossili are pretty antiquated.

"The one big problem with the toilets at Caswell is to get to them you have to cross a busy road so just from a safety point of view that is a real bonus.

"Anything that improves facilities and makes things easier for visitors is to be welcomed."
