Police hope the photos of a baby's top, towel and beach towel will be recognised

Detectives trying to trace the mother of an abandoned newborn baby who died have released photographs of his clothing and towels used to wrap him.

Gwent Police are appealing for help in tracing the mother of the boy, who was found behind a Spar store in Cwmcarn, in Caerphilly county, on Thursday.

They want anyone who recognises the items to come forward.

Police say they are "extremely concerned" about the mother's health and have urged her to contact them.

"Perhaps if you have recently bought a present for an expectant mother and recognise the items please get in touch," said Supt Jon Burley.

Someone must know who the mother is as, until recently, this lady would have been heavily pregnant

The photographs of items include:

• A bath size towel bought from Dunelm. The towel is white with a gingerbread man and heart design on it

• A blue and white striped long sleeve top, with buttons at the neck, aged 3-6 months from Next (this is part of a three-piece set)

• An orange beach towel manufactured by Arencibia, an outlet based on Gran Canaria

• A George orange vest top, size 14

Mr Burley said: "The orange towel could have been brought back from a holiday and, if anyone knows a woman or girl who owns an orange vest top and wears a size 14, we would appeal for them to get in touch."

Appeal after abandoned baby dies

"Someone must know who the mother is as, until recently, this lady would have been heavily pregnant. We need these people to come forward."

The baby was discovered in a lane by the son of the owner of the shop, Gursewak Singh, about 10 miles (16km) from Newport.

Mr Singh said of his son: "He has been crying since yesterday, asking me questions about how someone can leave a baby like that in the bag.

"He's very shook up. I haven't got the answers to give him."

Anyone with any information is being urged to contact Gwent Police on 101.
