Nine buses gutted in depot fire

An investigation is underway after nine buses were destroyed in a suspected arson attack at a depot.

Firefighters were called to the Stagecoach base on Cardiff Road in Cwmbach near Aberdare at 0217 BST.

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said three of its engines and other crews spent almost three hours at the scene putting out the flames.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said it was treating the cause of the fire as arson.

John Gould, Stagecoach's managing director for south Wales, said: "We are aware that around 2am this morning our premises at Aberdare were broken into to and a deliberate act of arson took place.

"We are grateful for the fact that there were no injuries or fatalities."
