A man has appeared before magistrates in Newport charged with making explosives.

Gwent Police arrested the 30-year-old on 4 April on suspicion of possessing explosives after his home in Blackwood, Caerphilly, was raided.

He was arrested again the following day under the Terrorism Act 2000 after articles were recovered from the property by officers.

Officers said they were treating the incident as an isolated one.

The man was arrested the second time on suspicion of having items for use in connection with the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism.

Police have stepped up high-visibility patrols in the area to reassure the community.
