Burmese python stolen from shop

The shop owner said the snakes were placid and not poisonous

Four snakes, including a Burmese python which can grow to be 18ft (5.5m) long, have been stolen from a reptile shop.

Thieves struck at the Scales 'N' Tails reptile and animal pet shop in Porthcawl, near Bridgend.

Shop owner Craig Hosken said the albino Burmese python, currently just 18in long (45.7cm), was the most valuable snake taken, priced at £220.

The snake, which eats rat pups, is not dangerous but Mr Hosken said it could bite if not properly handled.

The other snakes stolen were a baby royal python, valued at £85, and two baby albino corn snakes, valued at £49.99 each.

"They would've put the snakes in their pockets, that's the only way they could've done it," said Mr Hosken, who has owned the shop for six months.

"They [the snakes] do tend to calm down after being handled but one of them, the Burmese python, needed a little bit of work.

"If somebody had him in their pocket, maybe he could have bitten them."

He added the snakes were placid and not poisonous but the Burmese python could grow to a length of 18ft (5.5m).

"It's not going to happen overnight though, it takes a fair while!" said Mr Hosken.

It is believed the thefts took place last Monday between 1200 and 1300 GMT.

Mr Hosken said his grandfather, Elwyn Pritchard, was serving when three people came into the shop together.

The missing snakes, and other items including a tank thermostat, were only noticed after the customers had left.

South Wales Police said it was an unusual theft and those responsible appeared to have had access to a key to unlock the tanks.

"I would urge anyone who is offered any of these types of snakes for sale, both members of the public or specialist buyers or sellers, to contact the police," said Inspector Alan James.

"We want to assure the public there is no cause for concern as these snakes are not believed to be dangerous or venomous."

Anyone with information is asked to contact South Wales Police on 01656 655555 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
