A teenager was awarded a perfect 400 out of 400 mark in a GCSE examination.

Owen Lloyd, 16, achieved top marks in the additional science paper meriting a letter of congratulations from examining body Edexcel.

Only 16 of the 54,014 students who sat the exam across the UK were awarded perfect marks.

Owen, who attends Tonypandy Community College in the Rhondda, previously sat his AS-level geography papers a year early and was awarded 100%.

"It was a shock to have this, I was very happy to have this result," said Owen, who lives in Pontypridd.

"Science is something that comes naturally but I did a lot of revision.

"It's a subject I enjoy and when I was little I enjoyed science the most."

Owen did well in other subjects too and achieved 10 A* grades and one A grade at GCSE.

Tonypandy Community College head teacher Stephen Parry said: "We are thrilled and delighted by Owen's outstanding achievement.

"His academic results must be one of the highest in the country however he still remains one of the most mature and modest of his year group.

"The staff and governors are very proud of his achievements."

Edexcel's managing director Jerry Jarvis said: "This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work students put into preparing for their exams."

Owen is now studying chemistry, physics, mathematics, geography and French at A-level but is keeping his career options open.

"I'm totally unsure of what I want to do," he said.

"I want to go to university but don't know what I will study, I've no idea!"
