Police said there was an altercation in Clytha Square
A 39-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a man 11 days after he was allegedly assaulted in Newport city centre.

Gwent Police said the man would appear before Newport magistrates after the death of Kevin Albert Wilmott, 38.

Mr Wilmott died on Friday at the University Hospital, Cardiff, after suffering a head injury on 17 December.

Police said there was an altercation in Clytha Square, near the A48 Cardiff Road junction.

Mr Wilmott was first treated at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport before being transferred to Cardiff.

He was described by his mother Betty as "a good man who would help anybody".
