A man is still being questioned on suspicion of murder after a 38-year-old man was assaulted in Newport.
Kevin Albert Wilmott suffered a head injury in the city centre on 17 December and died at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff on Friday.
His mother Betty said: "Kevin was a good man who would help anybody".
Gwent Police have appealed for witnesses to an altercation in Clytha Square. A 39-year-old man was arrested on Saturday morning.
A force spokesman said there was a dispute between two men at 1730 GMT on 17 December, close to the junction with the A48 Cardiff Road.
Four other people were believed to be in the area at the time.
Mr Wilmott was first treated at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport before being transferred to the University Hospital in Cardiff.
