An artist from Cardiff has received a 5,000 prize for winning a national self portrait competition.

Joseph Galvin, 31, is the first winner of a new bursary and entertainer and fellow artist Rolf Harris presented him with the prize in London.

Mr Galvin's portrait is included in an exhibition by 50 members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters at Temple Place until 10 October.

He said it was an "amazing opportunity" to develop his techniques.

Rolf Harris's own self portrait is also on show in the exhibition.

Mr Galvin intends to move to London for a year and rent a studio at the Arts Academy.

Make a statement

He spent between a week and 10 days completing his self portrait with the help of a mirror and said it was a totally immersing and involved event.

"You can be more objective painting someone else's portrait, but painting yourself is a more subjective experience. It depends on your state of mind at different times," he said.

The artist, who did his art foundation course at Carmarthenshire college, completed his degree in fine art in Canterbury.

Mr Galvin said he enjoyed the personal nature of portraiture and being able to relate to people.

With his own portrait, he said he was "trying to make a statement" by being direct and simple and engaging with the viewer.

The bursary will allow Mr Galvin, to watch and work with members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters over the coming year.

They will be able to give him advice on how to set about getting commissions. He will also be invited to exhibit at their annual show in 2008.
